Position/Salary Grade
Design Drafting – Level 1 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Performs introductory and elementary drafting assignments such as tracing, markups and CADD correcting. Education/Experience: Entry level with high school, trade school or community college education. Knowledge and/or use of CADD in this family is not required, but generally is preferred. Typical Titles: Technician 1, Drafter 1, Technician 2, Designer 1, Drafter 2 and Associate Designer.
Design Drafting – Level 2 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Under general supervision, with some exercise of judgment, prepares engineering drawings from rough sketches or from general engineering and design information according to established standards and procedures. Education/Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience. Knowledge and/or use of CADD in this family is not required, but generally is preferred. Typical Titles: Technician 2, Technician 3, Designer, Designer 2, Drafter 2, Designer 1 and Drafter 3.
Design Drafting – Level 3 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Develops working drawings, within company and industry standards and codes, from equipment specifications and detailed drawings. Fully understands materials and methods normal to the discipline and has some elementary exposure to design. May apply intermediate level techniques in CADD. Education/Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience or a BS degree. Typical Titles: Technician 3, Technician 4, Drafter/Designer 2, Designer 2, Technician, Designer 1, Senior Designer, Drafter 3, Designer 3 and Senior Designer/Drafter.
Design Drafting – Level 4 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. With minimal direction, performs layout and design work from basic data. Uses theoretical and practical engineering knowledge. May apply advanced techniques in CADD and standard design applications using this equipment. Education/Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience or a BS degree and 3 years of experience. Typical Titles: Technician 3, Drafter/Designer 3, Technician 5, Designer 3, Technician 4, Designer, Designer 4, Senior Technician, Drafter 4 and Designer 2.
Design Drafting – Level 5 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. This highest level of non-supervisory design work includes senior CADD designers. Education/Experience: Minimum 7 years of experience or a BS degree and 5 years of experience. Typical Titles: Technician 5, Technician 6, Senior Principal Designer, Designer 4, Senior Designer, Technician 4, Designer 3, Designer 5, Senior Designer 1, Advanced Designer, and Drafter 5.
Design Drafting – Level 6 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Technically directs design work. Assigns and schedules work and is responsible for progress and quality of drawings of a section or group of designers/drafters generally assigned to a single project or working in a specialized field. Education/Experience: Minimum 8 years of experience or a BS degree and 6 years of experience. Typical Titles: Technician 6, Technician 7, Principal Designer, Designer 6, Project Designer, Senior Designer, Lead/Supervising, Designer, Senior Designer 1, and Senior Designer 2.
Design Drafting – Level 7 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Plans and schedules work and staffing, assigns lead roles, evaluates performance and counsels assigned personnel. Include only first-level administrative supervisors. Education/Experience: Minimum 12 years of experience including experience as a lead designer. Typical Titles: Technician 7, Technician 8, Designer 5, Chief Designer, Design Manager, Supervising Designer, Senior Designer, Lead/Supervising Designer, Designer 7, Senior Designer 2, Technician 5 and, Design Specialist 1.

Design Drafting – Level 8 Incumbents perform drafting/design functions using computer graphic equipment (CADD), either occasionally or one hundred percent of the time. Prepares design criteria for design of projects and equipment, estimates drawings and resources needed to design projects, and manages company resources efficiently to accomplish assigned work. Typical Titles: Designer 6, Technician 9, Senior Design Manager, Manager, Principal Designer, Manager 4, Technician 8, Supervisor, Manager 2 and Manager 3.
